Are You Closed Minded?

Glorious morning!

In today's quote we will contemplate Thomas Dewar's quote.

“ Minds are like parachutes-they only function when open. “

Thomas was born in 1864 and died in 1930 at age 60. He was a Scottish whiskey distiller . He and his brother built the family company called Dewar and Sons into an international success. Thet blended their whisky to make it more appealing to the international pallet. Dewar had excellent skills in marketing. I'm thinking if you do not have an open mind, you will only reach a select few who think and have tastes like you. That narrows one's marketing potential, yes?

So let’s go a little deeper into the quote. Let’s start with having a closed mind and compare. When someone has a closed mind, they have certain beliefs that they are not willing to challenge because they feel they are one hundred percent correct. Being closed minded can prevent you from trying something new and when we don't explore and try new things, we can't expand and grow. When we don't consider new ideas, we can't progress.

There was a time when there were no cars. Had someone not challenged their belief that horse and buggy was the only way to travel, well, we would still be traveling that way. Being closed minded keeps you in a contracted state, a state where our soul cant express its fullest potential. It keeps one from seeing the bigger picture, the potential of something more. When someone thinks they are in a hopeless situation and are closed minded to potential solutions, they experience a continuation of hopelessness. There could be someone just around the corner holding that very solution that they need, if only they were seeking outside their closed mind and are open to it.

There are many reasons for the limiting side effects from having a closed mind. One of the main reasons I feel, is they were modeled that kind of thinking from caregivers early on and it's just a conditioned response. I also think a closed mind can develop from unconscious fear. Let’s say someone offered an opportunity to a closed minded person being driven by low self esteem or fear ( fear can cause low self esteem or add to it ) and that opportunity would give them the potential to make a hundred thousand dollars more than their current job pays. The only catch is they need to learn a new set of skills that requires a training program that costs ten thousand dollars and the person says, “ well I can't afford that, so looks like Im out of luck “ If the person stays closed minded to the belief they just spoke, they will never experience the growth and financial abundance that the opportunity could afford them.

However, they would have a much better chance at seizing that amazing opportunity if they weighed some potential options, like trying to get a loan either from a bank or a family member. Maybe they could explore their credit card situation and see if they can use credit. Maybe get a second job for a while until their money can be saved. Maybe doing the barter system with someone and performing a daily service for them in exchange for a loan. With a closed mind, they don't get a salary increase, with an open mind there are many possibilities to make it happen. Having an open mind is the same thing as saying, “ I don't know everything “ and that’s a good thing. When we are strong enough to admit we do not know everything and in our entire lifetime we will STILL not know everything, we get the blessings of new opportunities. We get the blessings of new wisdom. We get the opportunity to explore human potential. Human potential is limitless.

I mean just look at the last hundred years and how we have progressed. Had no one stepped out of their box of narrow mindedness or closed mindedness, we would still be in the dark ages in very primitive conditions and even worse, primitive behaviors, Yikes!. Having an open mind lets us explore solutions we might have never heard of or seen. Having an open mind is a gift that the animal kingdom does not have. Their lives are pretty limited compared to ours. I am grateful I have developed an open mind, how about you?

Do you or someone you know have a closed mind and could use a little clarity as to why? I can help find the answers with my open mind. Make a free discovery call today. Peace be with you , Dawn
