Why Do We Stay In A Job We Hate?

Glorious morning!
Today I’m going to expand on a quote from Confucius.
“ Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life.”
Confucius was a Chinese philosopher. He was born in the time period of C.551-c.479 BCE. This is an important quote to really consider. If we spend our lives doing jobs we hate, we are only torturing ourselves. Waking up each day and trying to find motivation to go to a job you don't like is like trying to get motivated to fall in love with someone you have no attraction to on any level.

Why do we sometimes put up with working at a job we don't like? Sometimes it's to teach us what we don't want. Kind of like how do you know if you would like sushi if you have never tasted it before. Sometimes we take a job because we really needed the money and no other options were coming in at the time. Then there are people who stay at a job they hate. I think it can be for a bunch of different reasons, one of them is because they fear change. When you have been at a job for a long time, you simply get used to the routine and even the drive to and from work. The thought of changing their job or career is a prospect of facing the unknown. Sometimes it's because the pay is good, the benefits are great and you can get pay raises and the retirement plan is good, but you're stuck in a cubical all day with your face in a computer and you are bored to tears. Each day doing the same thing over and over.

It can be that they are in debt and feel stuck .It can also be because they feel they would disappoint their parents. Whatever the reason, staying in a job that you don't like leaves a looming dissatisfaction in the background of your life that will never leave. How can one ever really be happy and enjoy life when carrying that around? Not to mention everyone around you will experience your dissatisfied life as well. When we settle for money instead of personal fulfillment, we let ourselves down. When we settle for security, we let ourselves down. When we settle, we may miss what we really came here to do. I call it your soul's mission. I believe we all have certain gifts we are meant to share with the world that come naturally to us. When we use those innate gifts, we feel satisfied. We feel fulfilled. We never wake up saying, “ ugh, I have to go to work “ with dread inside.

I was once working for someone who was not a caring person. For whatever reason ( most likely unhappy inside ) he would occasionally get annoyed if we were slacking a little, and let us know by getting snippy and then saying “ you don't have to like me “ and let me tell you, he meant it. He could have cared less. He wanted you to be quiet and produce. It was all about money and production. The human element was not expressed by him and I hated working there. My co-workers made it bearable to stay. I tolerated the job for years because I had young children at the time and only worked 11 hours a week. I knew it would be tricky finding a job that would hire you for that little amount of hours and I didnt want to work more because I wanted to be with my kids. I ended up leaving when my youngest went into kindergarten. I was able to offer more hours to work so I had more options. It was the only job I had where I would wake up and go “ oh lord , ‘I have to work today, yuck " I have never worked at a job like that since. I learned my lesson. Plus I now know more about the law of attraction. We can attract exactly what we want. It just takes intention, faith and action. I am now doing work that I love. We only get one shot while we are here to live our dreams and they are worth fighting for.

I wish I had seen this over a year ago. Fortunately, trusting God when I was in a job that I disliked for a couple of years, I finally got the courage to quit the corporate life late last year. I had no plan except to dip into my IRA/401k and low and behold, 2 people (1 doctor and 1 great friend) provided me opportunities to start generating more than 1/2 of that income within 24 hours of me quitting my job. While not "killing it", my basic expenses were being paid. Recalling I did a column exercise in the months before that event, God, my friends and my column exercise helped deliver the family without skipping a beat.
